It's Sunday once again and that can mean only one thing... a whole new bunch of DVDs are heading your way. So here's what's new and different this week...
The big title that will be at the top of all the sales and rental charts next week is certainly "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith."
Torn between loyalty to his mentor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and the seductive powers of the Sith, Anakin Skywalker ultimately turns his back on the Jedi, thus completing his journey to the dark side and his transformation into Darth Vader.
The film stars Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Hayden Christensen, Ian McDiarmid, Samuel L. Jackson and Christopher Lee and its release completes the Star Wars saga on DVD. "Sith" is available in widescreen and full screen editions.
Also popular will be the Special Edition of "Office Space," in widescreen and full screen formats.
Unable to endure another mind-numbing day at Initech Corporation, cubicle slave Peter Gibbons (Ron Livingston) decides to get fired. Armed with a leisurely new attitude and a new girlfriend (Jennifer Aniston), he soon masters the art of neglecting his work, which quickly propels him into the ranks of upper management.
When first released back in 1999, "Office Space" was overlooked, but soon thereafter found its audience on cable and through college screenings. It's now a certifiable cult favorite with a built-in fan base, eager for the deleted scenes and bonus features this "Special Edition with Flair" provides.
Hilary Duff teams up with Heather Locklear in the romantic comedy, "The Perfect Man." Duff is Holly, a well-intentioned teenager who, in an effort to boost her moms (Locklear's) sagging self-esteem, invents a secret admirer for her.
The only problem is she creates an imaginary boyfriend so perfect that mom wants to meet him.
"Perfect Man" features Chris Noth and Queer Eye's Carson Kressley and is available in - you guessed it - widescreen and full screen versions.
"Heights" follows five characters over twenty-four hours on a fall day in New York City and marks a strong directorial debut for Chris Terrio.
Director James Cameron takes you on a once-in-a-lifetime journey in "Aliens of the Deep," an IMAX film, presented on DVD in 2-D (not 3-D as it was in theatres). The film gives you extraordinary glimpses of the creatures that live in an alien world in the deepest depths of the sea.
"Millions" is a great family film about two British brothers who come across £265,000 stolen in a bank robbery. One wants to spend it all on toys and gadgets, while the other prefers charity and gifts. But there's a bigger problem...
They only have one week to spend the cash before the UK switches its monetary unit from the pound to the Euro (which - just for the record - hasn't yet happened, nor is it likely to).
"Millions" arrives this week in widescreen and full screen editions.
Margaret Cho returns to the concert stage with in her one-woman show, "Assassin."
Taking aim at the Bush administration and the religious right, she pulls no punches in her comedic assault on what she calls the "ever devolving" state of the union.
In honor of the 40th Anniversary of the Grateful Dead, Monterey Home Video is releasing a DVD of the group's famed 1980 concerts at New York's Radio City Music Hall.
"Dead Ahead" preserves the Grateful Deads best loved songs as performed live onstage by Jerry Garcia, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Brent Mydland, with comedians (and Dead Heads) Al Franken and Tom Davis acting as MCs.
While we're taking a detour through the 80's, why not take a look at the "The Brat Pack Movies and Music Collection?" This is a 3-Disc set of three teen films starring Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy and Robert Downey Jr.
There are several interesting choices from television this week, chief among them the 20-Disc "Sex and the City Complete Series Collector's Box Set." It's all been on DVD before, but the new set is being billed as the "definitive" edition and includes a bonus disc with a modicum of new special features.
We've blasted HBO previously for charging too much for its DVDs (Sex will cost you nearly $300, although the "street price" is closer to two hundred bucks), but there's no denying this new boxed set is, well, downright sexy.
The release of thematic episodes from the 70's talk show hosted by Dick Cavett continues.
Out this week is "John Lennon & Yoko Ono," a 2-Disc set with three complete shows from 1971 and 1972, with new introductions by Cavett. The September 11, 1971 show is notable as it was the first American television interview John gave after the breakup of The Beatles.
Cavett is not the only chat show host with a DVD this week... Merv Griffin arrives on DVD with "40 of the Most Interesting People of All Time," a 3-Disc set which includes interviews with Martin Luther King, Jr., Jack Benny, Grace Kelly, Ingrid Bergman, John Wayne and others.
Rounding out this week's TV DVDs are the First Season of "Fame" (it's gonna live forever on DVD), the Second Season of "The Partridge Family" and Season Three of "American Chopper."
That's our DVD story and we're sticking to it (for this week, anyway).
See you next time.
Regards,

"Leave it to Beaver," one of the most beloved series from television's Golden Age comes to DVD for the first time on November 22nd.
The sitcom, seen on the CBS and ABC television networks from 1957 to 1963, details the adventures of a quintessential American family, the Cleavers.
Theodore "Beaver" Cleaver (Jerry Mathers) can't seem to avoid trouble and his older brother Wally (Tony Dow), and mischievous pal Eddie Haskell (Ken Osmond), aren't any help.
|
|
| But with some wise advice from his father Ward (Hugh Beaumont) and mom's (Barbara Billingsley's) home-cooked meals, Beaver learns that all's well that ends well. |

On November 15th, Fox Home Entertainment brings forth Anniversary Editions of three of Rodgers & Hammerstein's movie musical classics: "The Sound of Music," "Oklahoma!" and "State Fair."
The 2-Disc 40th Anniversary Edition of "The Sound of Music" brings together the entire cast to share their memories of the making the timeless family classic.
Winner of 5 Academy Awards® (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Music, Best Film Editing and Best Sound), "The Sound of Music" chronicles the real-life story of the seven von Trapp children, their widowed father (Christopher Plummer) and the free-spirited governess (Julie Andrews) who brings music and joy back into their lives.
|
|
Andrews serves as host of this 40th Anniversary DVD, which features several hours of all-new documentary material created especially for this edition, presented by arrangement with the Rodgers & Hammerstein organization and produced by Emmy® Award winner Michael Kantor.
Disc One of the set will offer two ways to view the film: the fully restored original theatrical feature and a brand new interactive version with a sing-along function (in English, French and Spanish) allowing viewers to watch, listen and sing-along, based on the wildly popular internationally touring show. Disc Two is fully loaded with several hours of all-new special features and bonus materials.
Fans will be taken from the Hollywood Hills to the Austrian Alps and along the way will hear the story behind "The Sound of Music," as told by Andrews and others; they'll drop in on a chat between Andrews and Plummer; travel back to Salzburg with Charmain Carr (Liesel) to revisit the movie's locales; join all seven of the children in a family reunion concert and even tag-along to a sing-along "Sound of Music" at the Hollywood Bowl.
Also included will be commentary by director Robert Wise (taken from the laser disc edition of the film) and an all-new commentary by Andrews and Plummer.

To mark the 50th Anniversary of "Oklahoma!" a new definitive 2-Disc edition of the 1955 musical comes sweepin' down the plain - also on November 15th - with bonus features as high as an elephant's eye.
For the first time, the Cinemascope version of the film will be made available, along with the Todd-AO version. In addition, the two competing widescreen filming and projection methods are the subject of one of the bonus featurettes on the second disc.
Other extras on "Oklahoma!" include behind-the-scenes photo galleries, vintage stage excerpts of key songs from a rarely seen TV salute to Rodgers & Hammerstein, theatrical trailers and teases and the film's original lobby cards and one-sheet posters.
|
|
|
There's also sing-along subtitles (in English), as well as commentary from Ted Chapin, President of the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization and Hugh Fordin, author and film historian.
From its Broadway roots to its motion picture success, "Oklahoma!" contains soaring melodies and joyous songs in a loving celebration of the American spirit. Winner of two Academy Awards®, the film stars Shirley Jones as a young prairie woman with two suitors: good-natured Curly (Gordon MacRae) and the hired hand, Jud (Rod Steiger).

The "State Fair" 2-Disc 60th Anniversary Edition features both the Oscar®-winning original 1945 movie musical starring Jeanne Crain, Dana Andrews and Dick Haymes as well as - for the first time on DVD - the 1962 remake with an all-star cast led by Pat Boone, Bobby Darin and Ann Margaret.
The 1945 "State Fair" has commentary by film historian Richard Barrios and Tom Briggs (co-author of the Broadway musical version), while the remake boasts commentary from Pat Boone never before released on DVD.
Also included are photo galleries, theatrical trailers, a "making of" documentary, vintage stage excerpts performed by Mary Martin and sing-along subtitles (in English).

Rob Schneider returns as the title character in the unnecessary sequel, "Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo," coming to DVD November 29th. The producers claim it's a comedy.
Schneider's character is seduced back to his unlikely pleasure-for-pay profession, when his former pimp T.J. Hicks (Eddie Griffin) is implicated in the murders of Europes greatest gigolos.
Deuce must go back to work in order to clear his good friends name. Along the way, he competes against the powerful European Union of prosti-dudes and courts another bevy of abnormal female clients including the beautiful Eva, who suffers from acute obsessive-compulsive disorder.

|
This is one of the worst movies ever made. We're not going to tell you there's not a chuckle or two in there, but essentially this is an idiotic reshuffling of gags that weren't funny the first time around.
The movie runs less than 90 minutes, which is almost an hour and a half too long.
