"The Man" arrives on DVD January 17th. The misguided buddy-action comedy, a poor man's "Lethal Weapon" - with a bit of "Midnight Run" thrown in for good measure - stars Samuel L. Jackson and Eugene Levy.
The casting of Jackson as a sassy and ultra-cool Federal agent and Levy as a clueless dental supply salesman from Wisconsin is inspired. The movie, alas, is not.
A case of mistaken identity forces the two to team up as they speed through the streets of Detroit to pull off a sting operation and solve the murder of the agent's former partner.

Murder, shmurder! Their time would have been better spent searching for a quality screenplay to match their considerable - but wasted - talent.

This year's remake of "The Bad News Bears" comes to DVD on December 13th.
It's an unnecessary but faithful retelling of the tale of a gruff little league coach who turns his team of misfits into champions. Ironically, the remake plays better for adults than kids, what with its rude behavior, bad language and sexual themes.
Billy Bob Thornton takes the lead role of Morris Buttermaker, a role played to perfection by Walter Matthau in the 1976 original. Thornton is very good, essentially reprising his "Bad Santa" persona of a crusty and caustic, hard-drinking, foul-mouthed but lovable guy.

The DVD release will include six deleted scenes and three outtakes, four behind-the-scenes and making of featurettes, commentary by director Richard Linklater and writers Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, plus video baseball cards and the theatrical trailer.

The original film that inspired the Broadway musical megahit "The Producers" comes to DVD in a new Deluxe Edition on December 13th, just as the musical film based on the stage production opens in theatres.
"The Producers" - one of the funniest films ever made and Mel Brooks' directorial debut - stars theatrical legend Zero Mostel as low-rent Broadway producer Max Bialystock.
When high-strung accountant Leo Bloom (Gene Wilder) discovers that they can make more money producing a flop than a hit, they begin raising money from gullible investors.
|
|
Then they set about to find the worst show ever written... and they do.
Their new musical - "Springtime for Hitler, A Gay Romp with Adolf and Eva at Berchtesgaden" - includes dancing stormtroopers forming a Busby Berkeley-style swastika and lyrics imploring us to support the Fuhrer's cause: "Don't be stupid, be a smarty. Come and join the Nazi party."
With a flamboyant out of control director and an equally horrific cast, the double-dealing producing duo is banking on disaster. But when their sure-to-offend musical becomes a surprise smash hit, they find themselves faced with an entirely new dilemma.
Brooks won the 1968 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for "The Producers;" its pitch-perfect cast includes Kenneth Mars, Christopher Hewett, Lee Meredith, Dick Shawn and the previously mentioned Wilder and Mostel, whose comb-over alone gets more laughs than anything you'll find in most of today's alleged comedies.
