"The 40-Year-Old Virgin" finally gets lucky this week with the release of two separate editions. Out on Tuesday is an R-Rated Theatrical Edition and an Unrated version featuring over seventeen additional minutes of footage filmed specifically for the DVD and not shown in theatres.
Steve Carell stars as Andy Stitzer - a sweet-natured, middle-aged, retail employee with strong geek tendencies and a total lack of experience with the opposite sex. This very funny film earned over $100 million at the box office and marks the feature directorial debut of Emmy Award-winning producer-writer Judd Apatow, who provides commentary on both editions.
Also out this week is "The Bad News Bears" starring Billy Bob Thornton, which is good news for those that like remakes of heartwarming family comedies to have a fair amount of cussing and unpleasant behavior.
In the style of a Howard Hawks comedy, "The Baxter" is a charming romantic comedy that follows the twists and turns of a quiet young accountants life during the two weeks before his wedding to the girl of his dreams. The film stars Michael Showalter, Michelle Williams, Elizabeth Banks and Michael Ian Black.
Two older films we love return to home video this week...
"Airplane" is back in a Dont Call Me Shirley! Special Collectors Edition. Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty join panicky passengers, inept ground controllers and an inflatable auto-pilot in the disaster-film spoof voted one of the 10 funniest movies ever made by the American Film Institute.
Surely, you wont find a funnier film on DVD. And dont call me Shirley!
(Thank you. I'll be here all week; remember to tip your waitress... enjoy the veal.")
Also out this week is "Next Stop Greenwich Village," Paul Mazursky's bittersweet 1976 comedy set in the 1950's.
Larry Lapinsky (Lenny Baker) is a young man seeking fame and discovering independence in this gem of a film, available for the first time on DVD. His mother (Shelley Winters) is distraught when he leaves his traditional family home in Brooklyn and moves to "bohemian" Greenwich Village.
As a struggling actor, he gets entangled with a group of free spirits, discovers adult romance and, hardest of all, copes with his overbearing Jewish mother. Highly recommended!
The original movie that inspired the Broadway musical that inspired the new movie musical is out this week in a new Deluxe Edition. "The Producers" - one of the funniest films ever made and Mel Brooks' directorial debut - stars Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder as two men who hatch a plot to produce the worst Broadway show ever.
It's time to take another trip to the dark edge of Old Town with "Frank Miller's Sin City: Recut & Extended Edition," a new complete, expanded and unrated" version of the film with never-before-seen footage (23 minutes) integrated directly into the feature by director Robert Rodriguez.
"Saint Ralph" is the unlikely story of Ralph Walker, a ninth grader who outran everyone's expectations - except his own - in his bold quest to try to win the 1954 Boston Marathon; the film stars Campbell Scott, Adam Butcher, Jennifer Tilly and Gordon Pinsent and was written and directed by Michael McGowan.
Disney presents an all-new motion picture, the direct-to-home-video release of "Kronk's New Groove." The film is a feature length animated sequel to The Emperors New Groove.
Kronk cooks up a get-rich-quick scheme to impress his Dad, whom he can never please. But when things go wrong, Kronk kicks into comical gear and discovers the true riches in life are his friends and being true to your groove.
Also from Disney, via Vanguard Animation, comes "Valiant," an animated adventure about a little pigeon who becomes a hero during World War II. The film's voice cast includes Ewan McGregor, Ricky Gervais, Tim Curry, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Laurie, John Cleese, John Hurt, Pip Torrens, Rik Mayall and Olivia Williams.
TV delivers a bunch of new boxed sets this week.
There's "Tour of Duty" (The Complete Series), the Fifth Season of "The Gilmore Girls," the Second Season of "Reba" and "Miami Vice" (available separately), the Seventh Season of "The Simpsons," and from HBO, comes "Family Bonds."
And that wraps up another week of DVD news and reviews; as always, announcements of upcoming titles are below.
We'll see you back here next week with more!
Regards,
