This year's Academy Award® winner for Best Foreign Language Film, "The Sea Inside," is out on DVD this week. Javier Bardem stars in this controversial true story of poet and quadriplegic Ramón Sampedro, who fought for thirty years with the Spanish government and the Catholic Church for the right to end his life.
The DVD bonus features include deleted scenes, a behind-the-scenes documentary and commentary from Amenábar, the films director, co-writer, editor, composer and co-producer.
"The Sea Inside" is presented in widescreen in its original Spanish language audio track with the option of either English or Spanish subtitles.
Also out this week is "Kinsey," based on another true story. This one's about a man driven by scientific passion and personal demons to investigate the mystery of human sexuality. Liam Neeson stars as Alfred Kinsey, with Laura Linney as his free-thinking wife.
In "Team America - World Police," an international police force dedicated to maintaining global stability learns that a power hungry dictator is brokering weapons of mass destruction to terrorists. Naturally, the heroes embark upon a harrowing mission to save the world.
This comedy/action/adventure flick from Trey Parker and Matt Stone features a cast of marionettes and, frankly, we found the acting is a little wooden (voices supplied by Alec Baldwin, Tim Robbins, Matt Damon, Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn.)
"Team America - World Police" is being released in three versions: the theatrical cut in widescreen and full screen, plus an "Uncensored and Unrated Special Collector's Edition."
Go ahead, take a guess... which do you think will sell the best?
Also coming to DVD this Tuesday is the overlooked supernatural thriller, "White Noise" starring Michael Keaton (in widescreen and full screen) and "The Steve McQueen Collection," featuring four films from the screen legend who defined cool like no other actor.
"Son of the Mask" bills itself as the sequel to the 1994 comedy hit "The Mask."
But Jim Carrey has been replaced by Jamie Kennedy and whatever wit, heart and charm was evident in the first film has now gone missing. A Platinum Series Edition hits the street Tuesday.
"The Green Butchers" is an offbeat comedy from Denmark about two guys who open an organic butcher shop in a small town. Business sucks, but picks up considerably when an unlucky electrical repairman gets locked tin their deep freezer.
Never ones to waste inventory, the two friends fillet him and use him as one of the main ingredients in chicky-wickies, a new party snack that takes the town by storm.
"Tarnation" is thirty-one year old director Jonathan Caouettes inspiring documentary self-portrait, chronicling his chaotic upbringing in a dysfunctional Texas family and the unexpected relationship that develops with his mentally-ill mother Renee.
From TV this week comes "Call Me: The Rise and Fall of Heidi Fleiss" in an "unrated and uncut" edition. The Sopranos Jamie-Lynn DiScala plays the woman at the center of one of Hollywoods most provocative scandals - Heidi Fleiss turned sex into success with a call girl business that catered to Hollywoods biggest celebrities. Also starring Corbin Bernsen and Robert Davi.
Also from TV comes the Third Season of the BBC comedy "Monarch of the Glen," The Third Season of HBO's dramedy "Six Feet Under," Season One of "Scrubs," Season Two of "The Golden Girls," Season Four of "Seinfeld" and Season Five of "Cheers."
And that wraps up another week of new DVD releases. Please join us next week when we do it all over again.
Regards,

This year's Academy Award® winner for Best Picture, "Million Dollar Baby," comes to DVD July 12th.
"I don't train girls," trainer Frankie Dunn growls.
But something's different about the spirited boxing hopeful who shows up daily at Dunn's gym. All she wants is a fighting chance.
Clint Eastwood plays Dunn and directs, produces and composes music for this acclaimed, multi-award-winning tale of heart, hope and family.
|
|
Hilary Swank plays the resilient Maggie, determined not to abandon her one dream. And Morgan Freeman is Scrap, gym caretaker and counterpoint to Dunn's crustiness.
All three won Academy Awards®, with Swank and Freeman picking up Oscars® for their acting, while Eastwood was honored as "Best Director."
|
We're in the minority, as we didn't think "Million Dollar Baby" was the "best" picture last year (we'd have given that honor to "Sideways," but nobody asked us). Still, the universally acclaimed "Baby" is one of the greatest boxing films ever made. It manages to turn a rather melodramatic story into an intimate portrait, using boxing as a metaphor for the risks and responsibilities we face in everyday life.
"Million Dollar Baby" will be available in a 3-Disc Collector's Edition that includes a widescreen version of the film, a bunch of extras and behind-the-scenes featurettes (including a 25-minute roundtable discussion with Eastwood, Swank and Freeman, moderated by James Lipton) and the CD soundtrack of the film.
|
|
|
A 2-Disc version - with the special features, but without the soundtrack - will be available in both widescreen and full screen.
You can pre-order "Million Dollar Baby" now and save 35%.

"Bewitched," the beloved comedy classic, comes to DVD on June 21st, just as a big screen adaptation starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell makes its way to theatres. Included in the 4-Disc set will be the Emmy® Award-winning series entire First Season of 36 episodes.
Please note that the First Season of "Bewitched" was filmed and televised in black and white (as most TV shows were in the 1964 - 1965 season).
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, however, has chosen to release the show in its original B & W format (recommended), as well as in an inferior colorized version which has been artificially manipulated to pander to those who believe that anything that isn't in color is not worth watching.

As for the show itself... in every way, Samantha and Darrin Stephens are a perfectly normal, all-American couple, except for one small detail... Samantha's a witch.
And although she promised her husband on their wedding night never to use her powers, Samantha can't seem to resist performing a quick trick or two to get out of a jam. Further complicating matters is Samantha's mother, Endora, who is appalled that her daughter married a mere "mortal" and does her spell-assisted best to break them apart.
Elizabeth Montgomery stars as Samantha, along with one of the funniest ensemble casts in TV history: Dick York as her mortal husband Darrin, Agnes Moorehead as his witch-of-a-mother-in-law Endora. Alice Pearce as nosey neighbor Gladys Kravitz, George Tobias as her oblivious husband Abner, Marion Lorne as dotty Aunt Clara and David White as Darrin's boss Larry Tate.
Join them and a bunch of 60s pop icon guest stars - Adam West, Raquel Welch, Peggy Lipton and Arte Johnson - as this sitcom looks at the suburban lifestyles of the witch and famous.
