We start this week with something scary...
Robert De Niro and Dakota Fanning keep pulses pounding and hearts racing in "Hide & Seek," a chilling horror hit about a troubled father and daughter tormented by someone - or something - named Charlie, a malevolent entity who may or may not be imaginary but is definitely the stuff nightmares are made of.
"Hide & Seek" is out on Tuesday in both widescreen and full screen versions.
"Prozac Nation" is the emotionally charged true story of one womans struggle with depression and self discovery, based on the bestselling book of the same name.
Samuel L. Jackson and Juliette Binoche star in "In My Country," in which a cynical American journalist's affair with a beautiful Afrikaans reporter opens his eyes to the healing powers of forgiveness in post-apartheid South Africa.
Bollywood beckons in "Bride & Prejudice," a swirl of music, dance and comic misunderstandings that combine to make up this updated version of the Jane Austen classic "Pride and Prejudice." Aishwarya Rai stars (in her first English language role).
Lynn Redgrave, James Mason and Alan Bates star in "Georgy Girl," a frank, funny look at the sexual revolution.
As one of the first films to deal with the sexual revolution, "Georgy Girl," released theatrically in 1966, became a groundbreaking, worldwide sensation for its examination of life in swinging sixties London. The film garnered four Academy Award® nominations and led the forefront of a wave of European films that broke into American theaters for the first time.
Redgrave received international attention - and an Oscar® nomination - for her film debut as a girl named Georgy, who marries a wealthy older man so that she can give her roommate's abandoned, illegitimate baby, whom she loves, a home.
The title song - "Georgy Girl" - was a hit on two continents for the singing group The Seekers and was also nominated for an Oscar®. The tune was written by Tom Springfield and Jim Dale (who is now best known for his performance of the Harry Potter audiobooks in America.)
Hollywoods legendary tough guys and femme fatales collide once again in "The Film Noir Classic Collection: Volume Two," also making its DVD debut this week. The Collection includes five smoldering classics, all new to DVD and all digitally remastered: "Born to Kill," "Clash By Night," "Crossfire," "Dillinger" and "The Narrow Margin."
The movies star film noir icons Robert Mitchum, Barbara Stanwyck, Robert Ryan, Lawrence Tierney and Claire Trevor, among others, and feature commentaries from film historians and directors including Robert Wise on "Born to Kill;" Peter Bogdanovich, with archival contributions from Fritz Lang, on "Clash By Night;" John Milius on "Dillinger" and William Friedkin and Richard Fleischer on "The Narrow Margin."
All titles will be available in the 5-Disc Collection, as well as individually. In addition to the Collection, John Boormans classic neo-noir, "Point Blank," also makes its DVD debut this week featuring commentary from Boorman and director Steven Soderbergh.
But our favorite movie this week, "Strange Bedfellows," comes from Australia and is a bit of a guilty pleasure.
Two lifelong friends (Paul Hogan and Michael Caton) have discovered a way to save big money come tax time. All they have to do is pretend theyre a loving gay couple.
It seems so simple, but when a meddling tax inspector comes to town to investigate the couple, all hell breaks loose in this predictable, but very funny comedy.
From television this week comes Season Three of "Monk," "The First Howie Mandel Special" and "The Fantastic Four," the complete animated series.
The longest-running Marvel series in history arrives for the first time on DVD in a fantastic 4-Disc set, just as a live-action version of "The Fantastic Four" heads to the big screen. The new boxed set features all 26 episodes of the animated series that aired on TV during the '94 -'95 seasons.
Learn the origin of "The Fantastic Four," and be there as Mr. Fantastic, The Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and The Thing save the world from the dastardly Doctor Doom and his legion of villains. Every episode comes complete with exclusive introductions by the legendary Stan Lee.
Rounding out the thin list of titles available this holiday week is a disc from Major League Baseball Productions... "MLB Superstars Show You Their Game."
And that's all we have for you today, but we'd like to take a moment to wish a very happy Independence Day to our readers in the USA; we'll see you back here next Sunday.
Regards,

The vault opens on Walt Disneys classic "Cinderella" October 4th.
On DVD for the first time ever, this highly anticipated release has been digitally restored and comes loaded with bonus materials that allow viewers to extend their movie experience by transporting themselves into the magical world of Cinderella, and to gain fascinating insight into the animated classic with never-before-scene bonus features and footage.
"Cinderella," one of Disneys most popular fairytales makes its long-awaited DVD debut - after having been unavailable in any form for almost 10 years - as the sixth release in Disneys celebrated Platinum Edition line.
|
|
Not released theatrically since 1987, "Cinderella," the twelfth feature film to come from The Walt Disney Company, was produced by Walt Disney himself, and is one of only three films to have utilized the skills of every member of the formidable group of key animators that have been affectionately dubbed his nine old men (the others are Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan).
Originally released in 1950, the film features the voice talents of Ilene Woods (Cinderella) and Eleanor Audley (the wicked Stepmother), while future talk show host Mike Douglas supplies the singing voice of Prince Charming.
Nominated for three Academy Awards®, the film enjoyed theatrical releases in 1950, 1957, 1965, 1973, 1981 and 1987, drawing more than 75 million moviegoers and grossing more than $350 million (combined box office, adjusted to current dollars).
Since going back into the Disney vault after its VHS release in 1995, "Cinderella" has become the most requested Disney title for release, even above such classics as The Lion King, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Beauty and the Beast.
|
The "Cinderella" DVD plays off the theme of transformation found in the movie, having undergone a painstaking restoration with the use of state of the art digital technology.
DVD bonus features also play off this unique theme, demonstrating the fairytales integral part in the lexicon of pop culture with bonus items such as the ESPN Classics featurette Cinderella Stories, which showcases many of the most unbelievable Cinderella moments in sports history.

Queen Latifah heads an all-star cast in "Beauty Shop," coming to DVD August 23rd in a hybrid DVD that includes both widescreen and full screen versions.
In the film, from the producers of "Barbershop" and "Bringing Down the House," Latifah plays the star stylist at a posh salon run by an egotistical perfectionist (Kevin Bacon). Finding him impossible to work for, she leaves and opens a "Beauty Shop" of her own.
Inheriting an opinionated group of stylists, a colorful clientele and a sexy upstairs neighbor, she proves that you can't keep a good woman down... and you can't keep a shop full of quirky women from speaking their minds.
|
|
The film costars Alicia Silverstone, Andie MacDowell, Alfre Woodard, Mena Suvari and Djimon Hounsou and is surprisingly entertaining, although it's one of those films where most of the best quips can be heard in the trailer.
Special features on "Beauty Shop" include a gag reel, commentary on select scenes with director Bille Woodruff and a "Beauty Shop: Inside the Style" featurette.
Pre-order "Beauty Shop" now and save 30%.
