The Longest Yard DVD
Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D
Inside Deep Throat
Embedded Live DVD
Divan DVD
This week, the unnecessary and synthetic remake of "The Longest Yard" arrives on DVD. The movie stars Adam Sandler, Burt Reynolds, Chris Rock, James Cromwell and Nelly.

It's still the same old story: a pro quarterback (Sandler) and a former college champion and coach (Reynolds) are doing time in the same prison. Asked to put together a team of inmates to take on the guards, the quarterback enlists the help of the coach to bring the inmates to victory in a football game fixed to turn out quite differently.

"The Longest Yard" is available in both widescreen and full screen versions, but you'll probably have more fun with the 1974 original starring Reynolds as the one-time pro quarterback.

Two years before the original "Longest Yard" hit the screen, "Deep Throat" debuted in big cities across America and became the first sexually explicit film to cross over to mainstream audiences,

Breaking longstanding taboos against openly discussing sex in polite society, the movie helped launch the sexual revolution – and ignited a conservative moral backlash.

Now "Inside Deep Throat," a new documentary, examines the production, the politics, and the profound cultural impact of a phenomenon that remains as controversial today as it was over 30 years ago.

"Inside Deep Throat" comes to DVD in its original NC-17 theatrical version, as well as a sanitized R-rated version.

Actor Tim Robbins’ filmed version of his acclaimed play, “Embedded” was shot live during its recent off-Broadway run in New York. The play, a fictionalized story about the Iraq war and the journalists who covered it, was written and directed by Robbins, who also stars.

As a teenager, filmmaker Pearl Gluck left her Orthodox Jewish clan in her native Borough Park, Brooklyn for secular life in Manhattan. Many years later, Pearl’s father has one wish: that she marry and return to the community.

Gluck, however, takes a more creative approach to mend the breach in "Divan," her debut feature documentary, developed with the assistance of the Sundance Institute. She travels to Hungary to retrieve a turn-of-the-century family heirloom: a couch upon which esteemed rabbis once slept.

Enroute for this ancestral "Divan," Gluck encounters a colorful cast of characters who provide guidance and inspiration, including a couch exporter, her ex-Communist cousin in Budapest, a pair of Hungarian-American matchmakers and a renegade group of formerly ultra-Orthodox Jews.

Clever and highly entertaining, this new DVD release from Zeitgeist Films features over thirty minutes of additional footage, including deleted scenes, follow-ups and Q & A's.
Barbie & The Magic of Pegasus DVD
Mind Hunters DVD
Scary Movie 3.5 DVD
Born Into Brothels DVD
It's All Gone Pete Tong
Another family film from Robert Rodriguez, the director of "Spy Kids," comes to DVD this week. "The Adventures of Sharkboy & Lavagirl in 3-D" stars David Arquette, Kristin Davis and George Lopez.

It's about a young boy with a very vivid imagination and what happens when two of his most dynamic fantasies intrude into reality: a boy raised by great white sharks and a girl who carries the force of a volcano.

The storytelling misses the mark (probably not a problem for the film's target audience), but many of the special effects are stunning. (Both 2-D and 3-D versions are included in the DVD release.) Recommended only for those ten and under.

And for young girls this week we have the animated "Barbie & The Magic of Pegasus."

Princess Annika (Barbie) escapes the clutches of the evil wizard, explores the wonders of Cloud Kingdom, and teams up with a magnificent winged horse to defeat the wizard and break the spells that imprisoned her family. The movie features some scenes in 3-D and - like "Sharkboy" - the DVD includes 2-D and 3-D versions of the film.

Based on a true story and Winner of "Best Feature Film" at the Toronto Film Festival and the Gen Art Film Festival, "It's All Gone Pete Tong" is a darkly funny portrait of Frankie Wilde, the legendary British DJ and musical mastermind of the underground club scene whose career was cut down at its pinnacle by the loss of his hearing.

"Scary Movie 3.5" is a special unrated edition of the hit film “Scary Movie 3” with new, never-before-seen bonus material.

"Mind Hunters" is an intense, psychological action-thriller starring LL Cool J, Val Kilmer and Christian Slater,

And "Born Into Brothels," this year's Academy Award
® winner for Best Documentary Feature, is an inspiring look at the transformative journey of a group of extraordinary children in Calcutta's red light district,
Desperate Housewifes Season One DVD
Playboy's Hottest Housewives
From the Earth to the Moon
No Direction Home: Bob Dylan
Ned and Stacey: Season One
From TV this week comes the First Season of "Ned and Stacey" starring Debra Messing and Thomas Haden Church, the Signature Edition of HBO's "From the Earth to the Moon" and the First Season of the Emmy
®-nominated "Desperate Housewives."

Hoping to capitalize on the traffic for that last title, the folks at Playboy have decided to release their "Hottest House*wives" DVD this same week, proudly boasting on the box that the DVD "includes regular and widescreen formats."

And Martin Scorsese's film about Bob Dylan, "No Direction Home," recently seen on PBS, arrives on DVD in a 2-Disc set. This is Dylan's story from his roots in Minnesota to his early days in the coffee houses of Greenwich Village, to his ascent to pop stardom in 1966.

The two-part film includes never-seen performance footage and interviews with artists and musicians whose lives intertwined with Dylan’s during that time. For the first time on camera, Dylan talks openly and extensively about this critical period in his career.

That wraps another week of new releases here at the DVD Dossier; please join us next week when we'll do this all over again.

Regards,

Michael

Jiminy Glick in La La Wood DVD

"Jiminy Glick in LaLaWood" arrives on DVD October 4th.

Celebrity interviewer Jiminy Glick (Martin Short) tackles the big screen with his first feature film, which features a surprising number of celebrities (Whoopi Goldberg, Kiefer Sutherland, Sharon Stone, Forest Whitaker, Jake Gyllenhaal, Susan Sarandon, Steve Martin, Kurt Russell, Rob Lowe, Kevin Kline) willing to be the butt of assorted jokes and pointed barbs.

Hungry for an A-list interview that could launch him into the gossip-page stratosphere, the small-time journalist with big aspirations - and an even bigger appetite - drags his wife and kids across the country to the star-studded Toronto Film Festival.

But in between the nonstop parties and all-you-can-eat buffets, Glick soon finds himself in the middle of a scandalous mystery that just may become the celebrity scoop of the decade.

OK, folks, we're already on record as saying we're big fans of Jiminy Glick. As he goes about skewering Hollywood, he's ruthless, shameless... and absolutely clueless. And Jiminy Glick doesn't just take the cake, he eats it, too.

But a little of this stuff goes a long way for some people. And some people just don't get it at all.

So your tolerance for this film - with its brilliant characterization by Short, but also its very silly plot - may depend on how well you take to the Glick schtick itself.

"Jiminy Glick in LaLaWood" is presented in widescreen and special features include commentary by Martin Short and the writers, as well as a separate director's commentary by Vadim Jean (frankly, all this analysis for such a slight film seems a bit much).

Thriller That Speaks Your Language

Also coming to DVD October 4th is "The Interpreter" starring Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn.

The film, which the New York Daily News called "an intelligent nail biter" costars Catherine Keener.

Directed by Sydney Pollack, the thriller unfolds against a 21st Century landscape of international terror. The first feature film ever shot inside New York's United Nations headquarters, "The Interpreter" is set against a backdrop of mounting paranoia and dangerous secrets with incendiary global consequences.

The Interpreter DVD
In a hidden corridor of New York's United Nations headquarters, translator Silvia Broome (Kidman) overhears a potentially explosive secret about a planned assassination attempt on a visiting foreign leader.

Suddenly, Silvia's orderly, quiet life is turned upside down as she becomes a target of the conspirators. Placed under the protection of federal agent Tobin Keller (Penn), Silvia's world grows more nightmarish as Tobin digs deeper into her past and begins to question whether she is a victim - or a suspect.

The DVD release will be available in both widescreen and full screen versions and will include deleted scenes, an alternate ending, audio commentary by Pollack and several behind-the-scenes bonus features.

Sisterhood of Traveling Pants DVD
"The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" makes its way to DVD October 11th.

The coming of age adventure is based on Ann Brashares' best selling novel about a special 16th summer in the lives of four lifelong friends who are separated for the first time.

On a shopping trip, the girls find a pair of thrift-shop jeans that fits each of them perfectly and they decide to use these "magic" pants as a way of keeping in touch over the months ahead, each girl wearing the jeans for a week to see what luck they bring her before sending them on.

Directed by Ken Kwapis, "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" stars Bradley Whitford, Nancy Travis, Rachel Ticotin, America Ferrera, Mike Vogel, Alexis Bledel, Amber Tamblyn, Michael Rady, Blake Lively, Jenna Boyd.

Extras on the DVD release include deleted scenes, a behind-the-scenes featurette and a "Suckumentary," which is a rough cut of the documentary two of the characters in the movie made over the summer.

Pre-order "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" now and save 38%.
