It's a somewhat disappointing week for new DVD releases, with no clear standouts; let's just say that you'll be renting most of these rather than buying them for your permanent collection.
So here's a quick rundown of what you'll be most likely to rent this week...
Inspired by actual events and based on the best-selling novel by Richard Price, "Freedomland" is an uneven thriller starring Samuel L. Jackson, Julianne Moore, William Forsythe and Edie Falco.
When Brenda Martin (Moore) claims her car was stolen with her son in the backseat, the accusation sparks an intense investigation led by Detective Lorenzo Council (Jackson).
The frenzy to find her son escalates into an explosive nightmare of suspicion, accusation and racial tension. The search for the truth leads to some disturbing revelations and what we're sure is meant to be a shocking ending, but one that - as presented here - falls rather flat.
The DVD of "Freedomland" includes both widescreen and full screen versions of the film on a single disc, along with deleted scenes and three behind-the-scenes featurettes.
Two of the six writers behind the "Scary Movie" franchise take on the romantic comedy genre in the crass spoof comedy "Date Movie," out this week in both unrated and theatrical (PG-13) versions.
Skewering the multitude of "mushy" conventions and poking fun at every conceivable romantic movie, "Date Movie" stars Alyson Hanigan as Julia Jones, a hapless and hopeless romantic who has finally met the man of her dreams, the very British Grant Funkyerdoder (Adam Campbell).
But before they can have their big fat greek wedding, they'll have to meet the parents, hook up with the weddding planner and contend with Grant's beautiful friend Andy, who wants to put an end to her best friend's wedding.
One of the most acclaimed and admired actresses of her generation gets a second boxed set honoring her work with the debut of "The Bette Davis Collection: Volume Two."
Highlighting this new Collection are the revered 1962 thriller "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" newly remastered and available as a 2-Disc Special Edition and a new edition of the classic "Jezebel," which earned Davis her second Best Actress Oscar and has been restored from the original camera negative and remastered for optimum picture quality.
Also featured in the Collection are "The Man Who Came To Dinner," "Marked Woman" and "Old Acquaintance," all of which are making their DVD debuts. ("Old Acquaintance" is actually making its home video debut, having never been available in prior years on either videocassette or laserdisc.)
The extensive bonus materials include an additional bonus disc containing the exclusive-to-the-Collection "Stardust: The Bette Davis Story," a brand-new feature length documentary narrated by Susan Sarandon.
All titles are available individually (except the documentary), as well as in the Collection.
A screen legend from another generation get s her due with the release of the "Marilyn Monroe 80th Anniversary Collection."
This 6-Disc set contain five classic Monroe films: "The Seven Year Itch," "Gentleman Prefer Blondes," "Niagra," "River of No Return" and "Let's Make Love," all presented in their original aspect ratios.
Also included is a special biographical documentary called "Marilyn: The Final Days," plus the "AMC Backstory: The Seven Year Itch" featurette, two deleted scenes from "Seven Year Itch," trailers and still and poster galleries.
From television this week comes the adventures of those dimwitted twins, Hank and Dean, in "The Venture Bros.: Season One."
In this spoof of 1960s cartoons such as "Jonny Quest" and boys' adventure novels like "Tom Swift" and "The Hardy Boys," the Venture brothers - Hank and Dean - travel around the world with their renowned scientist father, Doctor Venture.
Imagining themselves as an unusually gifted team of brains and brawn but actually possessing very little of either - Hank and Dean treat even the most mundane situation like a bold new adventure or a curious mystery. As a result, they regularly find themselves in danger with a host of oddball villains but rarely find their way out.
Also out on Tuesday is the Fifth (and Final) Season of Showtime's "Queer As Folk," the Fourth Season of "The Kids In The Hall," the Sixth Season of "The Dukes of Hazzard" and the optimistically titled "Joey: The Complete First Season." (The "Friends" spin-off was recently canceled after only one season.)
And twelve days after it aired on NBC, the series finale of "Will & Grace" arrives on DVD. The unique relationship between Will Truman and Grace Adler comes to an end in this final show, which was met with a lackluster response by critics and many fans.
The disc includes exclusively produced behind-the-scenes footage of the final week, with interviews with the cast (Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Megan Mullally, Sean Hayes) and crew.
And that ends another week of dishing the dirt on new DVD releases. As always, you'll find a complete list of this week's top DVD choices below, along with a preview of next week.
We'll see you again next Sunday.
Regards,

DVD Direct 4 Less

Our most popular story at the DVD Dossier Blog this past week was a piece we did on a very naughty film called "Pirates" that will be edited and reissued on DVD in July with a new "R" rating.
We also took a look at the P2P DVD trading service, Peerflix, we announced the nominees for the 2006 Home Entertainment Awards and we shared the cover art for the new individual 2-Disc sets of the first three Star Wars films.
We announced the DVD debuts of "V for Vendetta" with Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving, the third volume in Warner's "Film Noir Classic Collection" series and the teen mermaid comedy "Aquamarine."
|
|
Also coming to DVD will be the Final Season of "The Flintstones," the First Season of the 1969 sitcom "The Bill Cosby Show," the Second Seasons of "Veronica Mars" and "Lost" and the Fifth Season of "Columbo."
Rounding out the crop of new DVD announcements are this year's Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Language Film, "Tsotsi," a new 2-Disc Collectors Edition of "A Fish Called Wanda," a slimmed-down 60th Anniversary Edition of "Dumbo," the 1998 cult hit "Safe Men," the quirky black comedy, "The Big White" and two football DVDs: "Seattle Seahawks: NFC Champions" and "Super Bowl XXXI-XL: Collectors Set."
You'll find all the details - and more - over at the DVD Dossier Blog. |
