There is simply no escape.
Thirty million DVD and VHS units of "Shrek 2" will be arriving in stores this week, just in time for its November 5th release. (Note the unusual Friday on sale date for this title.)
"Shrek 2" will be available in widescreen and full screen editions, both of which feature an alternate ending for the film called "Far, Far Away Idol." In this new ending, the film's characters compete in a singing contest judged by American Idol's Simon Cowell.
Other special features include commentary by the filmmakers, Spanish and French language tracks and more than 20 games and activities.
For the more dedicated ogre, there's the "Shrek 2 Essential Pack," which features the "Shrek 2" widescreen DVD, CD, and a special book, while the "Shrek 2 Combo Pack" features just the widescreen DVD and the CD (no book).
Also available on the same day: the positively Shrek-tastic "Shrek - The Story So Far," a special 4-Disc collection which includes full screen editions of the original "Shrek" and "Shrek 2," plus "Shrek 3-D" (the fifteen minute 3-D film seen only at Universal Studios - complete with four sets of special glasses) and a special bonus disc with lots of extras and a making of featurette,
And should you decide to shirk your responsibility as a Shrek consumer, you'll want to completely ignore the "Shrek 2 Game Boy Advanced Pack" and the "Shrek 2 Xbox Pack," also making their debut on Friday.
Warner Home Video continues their popular Looney Tunes DVD series with the 2-Disc "Looney Tunes: Spotlight Collection, Volume 2" and the 4-Disc "Looney Tunes: Golden Collection, Volume 2."
If you're playing catch-up, each of these is also available pre-packaged with Volume 1 of its respective series: "Golden Collection Volumes 1 and 2" and "Spotlight Collection Volumes 1 and 2."
And "Around the World in 80 Days" also hits the street this week.
The movie stars Jackie Chan and Steve Coogan and features memorable cameos by Arnold Schwarzenegger, John Cleese and Owen Wilson. The film itself is a lackluster remake of the 1956 star laden vehicle of the same name starring David Niven and a longer line of celebrities in even more memorable cameo roles.
Two of the best high school slacker comedies ever made come to DVD this week in new Special Editions: "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" and "Dazed and Confused." The "Ultimate Party Collection" brings you both films in one handy 2-Pack.
"Pirates of the Caribbean" also gets repackaged this week in a new 3-Disc Special Edition Gift Set, which is really nothing more than last year's 2-Disc Collector's Edition thrown together with a third bonus disc. This "Lost Disc" has a bunch of "never-before-seen" special features.
Aarrrgggghhh, what we be wantin' to know is...
Where be this "lost" disc and exactly when did ye find it?
Aye, 'tis true that this be a treasure and a welcome edition to any DVD collection, but is not makin' us pay twice fer the same film a violation of the Pirates Code?
We be but humble pirates, mate, and if you don't be wantin' a mutiny on yer hands, then ye should be givin' us all the special features that ye can muster at one time or be makin' the new bonus disc available separately for just a few doubloons!
From TV this week, we have the Second Season of "Star Trek The Original Series," the Third Seasons of "The West Wing" and "Three's Company" (available separately), the First Season of "Too Close for Comfort" and "The Simple Life 2: Road Trip."
And our friends at Cirque de Soleil bring "Fire Within" and "Varekai" to DVD in a new 4-Disc set.
We wish all our readers a spooky but safe Halloween!
And if you'll allow us, here's a gentle nonpartisan reminder to our U.S. readers: Tuesday is Election Day and your vote can indeed make a difference. As far as we can tell, both major candidates have strong pro-DVD platforms and enjoy watching movies and TV shows on DVD.
So here at the Dossier, we've established different criteria that we use to judge them. We're sure you probably have your own set of criteria, too.
But regardless of which candidate you favor, please take the time to vote this Tuesday. Your guy may not win without your support!
We'll see you back here next week.
Regards,

| Stuck at the Airport with Tom Hanks |
|
|
|
|
|
|
Tom Hanks and Catherine Zeta -Jones star in "The Terminal," directed by Steven Spielberg and inspired by a true story.
"The Terminal" tells the tale of Viktor Navorski (Hanks), a visitor to New York from Eastern Europe, whose homeland erupts in a fiery coup while he is in the air en route to America.
Stranded at Kennedy Airport with a passport from nowhere, he is unauthorized to actually enter the United States and must improvise his days and nights in the terminal's international transit lounge until the war at home is over.
|
|
Surviving for months on packets of ketchup and crackers, he's befriended by several eccentric airport workers and the completely miscast Zeta-Jones, a flight attendant who inexplicably views Navorski as the perfect romantic partner.
This is an implausible and decidedly uneven movie held aloft almost completely by the strength of Hanks' performance.
"The Terminal" comes to DVD on November 23rd in widescreen and full screen editions and also in a Widescreen 2-Disc Collector's Set, packed with hours of extras.

| The Office Says Au Revoir |
|
|
|
|
|
|
"The Office Special," recently shown on BBC America, is the scathingly funny conclusion to "The Office," the scathingly funny series that is the Beeb's fastest selling DVD comedy (on a par with "AB FAB").
We've only known one person who didn't immediately take to "The Office," the fake documentary series that's spot-on in the way it lays bare the clichés and the dreary daily details of life in a "typical" office.
This brilliant show was co-created, written and directed by Stephen Merchant and Ricky Gervais, who also stars and who was awarded this year's Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy Series.
