The Carol Burnett Show was one of the most popular and longest-running variety shows ever on television. Each week, the show featured comedy sketches and spoofs of famous movies, musicals and TV shows. Highlights included "As The Stomach Turns," and "Went With The Wind," a "Gone With The Wind" parody in which Carol descended a staircase wearing a dress made from drapes (complete with hanging rod).
A showcase for the unique talents of Carol, her guest stars and her rotating repertory company, most shows began with Carol asking if the technical crew could "bump up the lights," so she could see and answer questions from the audience. These unscripted Q & A sessions were always memorable and invariably included comments on Ms. Burnett's age and hair color and a request by a young woman for a kiss from Lyle Waggoner.
Each show ended with Carol's signature theme, a simple musical statement telling viewers she was "so glad we had this time together." And then, just as Carol said "so long," she would invariably tug on her ear, a private signal intended to honor her grandmother. Seen by millions of Americans each week, the private gesture soon became her "trademark."
The show received 22 Emmy Awards and Burnett received 6 Best TV Actress in a Musical/Comedy Golden Globe awards between 1967 and 1978.
