Who doesn't love Lucy?
I Love Lucy is perhaps the most successful situation comedy ever. It was television's first boffo "must see" hit and one - of only two - shows to ever go off the air while still number one in the ratings. (The other was The Andy Griffith Show.)
It was also the first show to be filmed before a live audience, introducing a revolutionary 3-camera technique, which became the standard for almost every TV show filmed in Hollywood to this day. And why was the show filmed in Hollywood, when virtually every other show at the time originated in New York?
Lucy and Desi didn't want to relocate from California! They couldn't do the show live because viewers in the East would have been forced to watch poor quality kinescopes (coast-to-coast transmission was not yet possible). So they recorded it on film to ensure that every viewer saw the same high-quality program.
Had they not preserved the show on film, generations of TV fans may not have come to know and love the Cuban bandleader, Ricky Ricardo, his wacky wife, Lucy and their frugal neighbors (and landlords), Fred and Ethel Mertz. Now shown worldwide in syndication, it's often said that the sun never sets on I Love Lucy. As you read this, someone, somehwere is likely watching an episode!
I Love Lucy is now available on DVD: Season One l Season Two l Season Three l Season Four
